"Balancing Nutrition" is
an online menu system that not only shows the menus for the day but also allows access to nutrition
information for menu items. You may use "Balancing Nutrition" to plan what you will eat or to
review the nutrition in what you have already eaten. "Balancing Nutrition" allows special
treats to fit into your day, helps you learn how to eat healthy, and puts the control of what's
right for you in your hands. Access the menus at
menus.wustl.edu and choose a location. Once
you click on the apples to proceed, the name of each item links to its nutrition information, or you
can choose the components of your meal and get a combined report.
WHY WOULD YOU USE "BALANCING NUTRITION"?
"Balancing Nutrition" provides all the food label nutrition information for many of the items
served on campus. Knowing this information can make it easier to choose foods that are lower in fat,
calories, and sodium, or to guide you in getting more calcium or other nutrients. All the recipes in
"Balancing Nutrition" are calculated for single serving portions, but the interactive menu
allows you to increase the servings if you choose.
If some foods have more sodium than you want or need, try to choose foods that are lower in sodium
to enjoy with the higher sodium foods. That's the "Balancing" part. For more tips on sodium, go to
Nutrition 101.
"Balancing Nutrition" not only allows you to see what you are doing, it allows you to print
out a report of what you've consumed. Printing out reports lets you keep track of how you do over
time - the real key to healthy eating. Keeping track of what you eat is also a good idea if you want
to set-up an individual nutrition appointment. Keeping track is as simple as hitting "report" on the
page.
