Minerals are compounds that are found in many different enzymes. Unlike vitamins, they are actually a part of the enzymes. There are two categories of minerals - the major minerals and trace minerals. Major minerals are present in the body in larger amounts; trace minerals exist in smaller amounts. There are approximately fifteen different minerals that are needed by the body. For information on all of them, click here.
Major Minerals:
- Calcium: dairy products and fortified juices, rice, cereals, and tofu
- Magnesium: small amounts in broccoli, spinach, nuts and beans
- Phosphorus: dairy products, salmon, mackerel, and swordfish
- Sodium: salty foods
Trace Minerals:
- Iron: beef, clams, oysters, soybeans, and fortified breads, pastas, white rice, ready-to-eat cereals, farina, and oatmeal
- Fluoride: municipal drinking water
- Zinc: beef, lamb, oysters, pork, veal, and most fortified ready-to-eat cereals
